Can the Porsche Cayenne (which boasts as much as 550hp and as little as 14 mpg) be reformed to a responsible hybrid fuel-sipping citizen of the road? Don’t laugh…Ferdinand Porsche designed a sporty (for the time) 4WD hybrid 110 years ago. Cars.com found the hybrid-powered luxury SUV well….not very hybrid-ey.
The surplus of torque made for quick, easy acceleration, and thankfully, this particular hybrid didn’t actually feel like a hybrid.
But they didn’t get to drive it enough to test its claimed 27 MPG combined fuel economy or other electron-powered fuel-sipping features. Which left them wondering…
After our brief encounter, we’re not sure the world really needs a hybrid Porsche SUV, especially given the availability of rides like the diesel-powered BMW X5. Then again, we didn’t think there was much need for a Porsche SUV to begin with, and sales figures have clearly proven us wrong.
After VW’s acquisition of Porsche and its promise to focus on the brand’s sporting heritage, Zuffenhausen may have to consider that question as well. Leaving the future of this mean green Porsche in doubt. We gave their brief review a preliminary score of 84.
