USA Today’s resident critic has been tapping the economic zeitgeist of late, rolling out reviews of one budget-priced ride after another. Who wins that race? By his reckoning, it’s the Kia Rio over the Toyota Yaris and Nissan Versa. Which is a tad more definitive than these cars’ overall scores on MotorMouths would indicate: the Versa’s 76 barely edges the Rio’s 75 and the Yaris’ 74. Then again, James R. Healy rates pretty high on the credibility scale, so perhaps he’s on to something grande.

The Fit must not be considered an Econobox. That said, sitting in the Rio5 at the auto show recently was a surprise to me - I found the interior quite nice for the price. I liked it quite a bit more than the Versa. The Yaris - blech, it might get good mileage but it sure isn't a nice place to be.

At the end of the day, I'd pay a little more the for functionality and fun-to-drive factor offered by the Fit.
